SUMMARY:René Sondenheimer (Graz)
DESCRIPTION:Physical observables in Brout-Englert-Higgs theories \nWe will use the method proposed by Fröhlich\, Morchio\, and Strocchi to analyze the spectrum of gauge theories with a Brout-Englert-Higgs mechanism. This formalism relates gauge-invariant bound state operators to invariant objects of the remaining unbroken gauge group after gauge fixing which provides a strict gauge-invariant formulation of the latter in terms of the original gauge symmetry without using the terminology of spontaneous gauge symmetry breaking. We also demonstrate that the Fröhlich-Morchio-Strocchi approach allows us to put new constraints on theories beyond the standard model by pure field-theoretical considerations and emphasize the exceptional role of the standard model weak gauge group. Particularly the conventional construction of grand unified theories has to be rethought.

SUMMARY:LMS Women in Mathematics Day 2021
DESCRIPTION:LMS Women in Mathematics Day 2021 \nWednesday 24 March 2021 \nPlease register your attendance at: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/lms-women-in-mathematics-day-2021-tickets-134326816123 \nThe deadline to register your attendance at this event is 21 March 2021\, 16:00.\nThis one-day virtual event will be held on 24 March 2021. This event aims to promote interest and careers in mathematics for women. Attendance is open to mathematicians of all genders and backgrounds. The event should be of interest to undergraduate students and postgraduate students as well as mathematicians at any stage of their career. \nBesides talks given by female speakers from a range of career stages across mathematics and statistics\, from academia and industry\, the meeting features a panel discussion and a poster competition open to women mathematicians at undergraduate and postgraduate as well as early career level. There will be three best poster awards\, each is a £100 prize. The deadline for poster submissions is 18 March 2021\, 16:00.\nFor more information about the schedule of the event and poster submissions\, please visit the event webpage: http://web.socem.plymouth.ac.uk/wim \nThis event is sponsored by the London Mathematical Society (LMS)\, the RSS South West Local Group\, and the University of Plymouth.
