The strong coupling — from hadrons to asymptotic freedom

After a general introduction of the running coupling constant of Quantum Chromodynamics, we will discuss its determination beyond perturbation theory and the connection to modern-day lattice simulations. The main focus is on a strategy presently pursued by the ALPHA collaboration to determine the strong coupling constant at the electroweak scale with a total uncertainty below the percent level.
