Title: What happens when a period vanishes?

Abstract: A period is a number obtained by integration of an algebraic

differential form over a topological cycle. In this talk I will review

few phenomena which follow from the vanishing of periods. This includes

the arise of limit cycles in planar differential equations, contraction

of curves and the millennium Hodge conjecture.
