Hidden structures of elementary mathematics (Manchester)
The subject area of my talk can be classified as the psychology of
mathematical abilities, but approached from a mathematician’s point of
view. I will discuss some hidden structures of elementary mathematics
(frequently quite sophisticated and non-elementary) and conjectural
cognitive mechanisms which allow some of the so-called “mathematically able”
children to feel the presence of these structures.
