The efficiency of automotive filter elements is significantly influenced by its microscopic structure. Computer simulations of the flow behaviour and the dust particle behaviour inside the complex filter media can provide a deeper understanding and enable a virtual optimisation process. Based on X-ray microtomography data and virtually-generated geometries we use the Lattice-Boltzmann approach to simulate the fluid dynamics and calculate the particle transport inside filter media microstructures.
